What are some unique ideas for knitting baby stuff for my friend?

jhostman asked:

My friend is due in September with identical twin boys – she already has a 3 year old son, a 2 year old son, and a year old daughter – and I’m looking for something unique to make each of them. I was considering different colored blankets, but a little punked up with some skulls and the like – but I don’t know what else to put on them!

I’m going to knit a pair of baby Chuck Taylors for each of them – in different colors, naturally – but I’ve got a lot of free time (since I can knit at work) and want to do something really spectacular. What are some good ideas, either of different projects or of what else to put on the squares for the blankets?

When my nephew was born 32 years ago I knit him a beautiful hairpin lace blanket. The yarn was multi-colored.

He really cherished it all his life. Many hours went into it. In fact I worked on it during my lunch hours.

Check out knitty.com for a pattern called Blu–they are knit baby jeans–seriously cute. elann.com has a great indigo cotton yarn…also denim stuff available from rowan, I think.

The Chuck Taylors idea is very cool!
Do you crochet as well as knit? If so, you could put pockets or something on the squares of the blankets, and put amigurumi animals or food or whatever into each one. Google amigurumi…you’ll fall in love.

For the daughter’s blanket, making each square a different kind of fastening–oversized for baby fingers, of course–in bright primary colors…big buttons to do and undo, velcro flaps to open, a belt buckle, shoe laces…

Map blankets are also cool–you can do a local or favorite area, and embroider some fun details like snow cap mountains, trees, jungle animals, planes, crops or landmarks.

anyway…hope you find something in there to spark your interest! Have fun!

Why not a felted diaper bag? There are lots of small toys, including amigurimi figures where the features are worked into the animal. Closed end buntings with an opening worked into them for the car seat buckles to go through are good, especially for fall babies. Intarsia picture afghans for them would be striking, too.
