How to get smell out of baby bottle?

pomegranatepants asked:

Hubby left a few of my baby’s bottles in his car wit a little formula in them for a few days. I cleaned them out and ran them through the dishwasher and sterilized them, but they still have that lingering sour milk smell. How do I get rid of it? I’m afraid to use bleach. These are the hard plastic Soothie bottles.

Buy new ones. Once the smell is baked in there is no getting it out. Kind of like the rotten food in the tupperware in the back of the fridge…it should go straight in the trash.

Let them sit with some vinegar in them. Then run them through the dishwasher again and see if that helps. You can also try making a paste of baking soda and water and letting them sit for a few hours, then run them through the dishwasher.

I don’t really know, but maybe you can try vinegar? Just make sure you rinse it well. But not sure if it will help.

The smell of sour milk never really comes out of bottles. The best thing to do is through them away and get more. Sorry I cant be more helpful but I have even tried bleach but it doesnt help eather.

    exactly what Punchy said!
The vinegar should take care of it. I run a coffee cup filled with vinegar through my dishwasher once a week to get rid of the sour milk smell in my daughters sippy cups.

I encountered the same problem but do not attempt to clean them, throw them out. Its not safe to keep plastic bottles in the sun. As far as bleach never use bleach to clean something your baby drinks out of. Would you use bleach to clean you dishes?

Try cleaning them with vinegar and then washing them with dishwashing liquid after. I’ve done this before too. My son used to throw his bottles in the car floor when he was done. Sometimes I would forget and then find them days later under my seat.

I know you’re afraid to use bleach but its very safe if you do it correctly.
What I always did was dilute the bleach and let the bottles soak in it for an hour if they weren’t too bad, if they had a horrible smell I would let them soak overnight. Run them through the dishwasher and then sterilize them afterwards.
